About

Like a curvacious caterpillar, it lies in the hilly landscape of Landgoed Mariëndaal, the Green Box Bed. This 19th-century tunnel made out of beech hedges provides a lovely secluded walk between the branches.

Orange in autumn, brown in winter, green in spring and summer, this tunnel is made out of carefully kept beech hedges that were planted in 1865, so the ladies of the nearby manor could enjoy an outdoor walk without getting a sunburn or even tanned. Like a box bed, it locks the visitor in and leaves the rest of the world outside. The beech branches took all kinds of curly shapes and the covered pathway winds gently along the hilly landscape. It makes for a lovely little walk and it's nice to think about the secret rendezvous that must have taken place here in the last 150 years.

Nearby you can have a picnic on an upcycled tombstone. This so-called "stone table'" is in this case a picnic table with a gravestone tabletop. Enjoy your lunch pack!

Know Before You Go

Mariëndaal is an estate that you can visit for free. It's great for walking and cycling.

From Arnhem Station, you could either take a bus to Oosterbeek Mariendaal (bus 51) or to bus stop Klein Warnsborn (bus 105 to Barneveld).

Or you could walk. From Arnhem Central train station it's just 45 minutes walking.
